A man came to Jesus and said, “Lord, I’ll follow You. But first let me go bury my father.”
Sounds reasonable, right?
It’s cultural, respectful, and honouring.
But Jesus turned and said:
“Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and preach the kingdom of God.” (Luke 9:60 NKJV)
Whoa!
Cold? Insensitive? Or… was Jesus trying to shake something loose in him, and by extension, in us?
Do not mistake what Jesus did as dismissing grief, because He wasn’t. Rather, he was exposing delay; exposing that “not yet” spirit that always finds a reason not to move when God calls.
- “Let me heal first.”
- “Let me get closure.”
- “Let me finish this season first.”
- “Let me make peace with the past.”
- “Let me finish my degree first.”
Jesus is saying: Come, now!
Ask yourself: What are you waiting to bury before you fully obey?
A past hurt? An old identity? A reputation? That version of you people still expect to see?
Listen, some things don’t need closure; they need your departure from it. And some seasons won’t end politely; you’ll have to muster the courage to walk away.
Letting the dead bury the dead is not meant to encourage you to be cruel. God forbid! It’s calling you to stop using “unfinished business” as a hiding place from your calling.
