“I know myself.”
How many times have you heard that? How many times have you said it? Usually right before stepping into a situation you shouldn’t. Right before entertaining a conversation you know could go sideways. Right before trusting yourself to stand in a place where even angels would tread carefully.
But do you really know yourself as well as you think? And even if you do, is knowing yourself enough to save you?
The reality is your heart is trickier than you realise.
Sin rarely happens overnight, if at all. It follows a process. You slip, little by little, trusting yourself a little too much, standing too close to the edge, assuming you’ll be the exception.
The Bible never said, “Trust yourself”. No, it says:
“Flee from sexual immorality.” (1 Corinthians 6:18)
“Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7)
“Pray that you do not fall into temptation.” (Luke 22:40)
Notice the pattern?
Flee. Resist. Pray.
Not flirt with temptation.
History is filled with stories proving that willpower alone is not enough to beat sin. That’s why Jesus told us to avoid temptation, not just fight it once we’re trapped in it.
Peter thought he knew himself. When Jesus said all His disciples would fall away, Peter pumped his chest and boldly declared:
“Even if all fall away on account of You, I never will.” (Matthew 26:33)
What a brave man he was! Hours later, though, he confidently denied ever setting eyes on Jesus… three times… with curses.
Peter fell because he trusted his strength more than he trusted Jesus’ warning. If Peter, who walked on water, could fall, so can we.
Better to flee than to fail.
